FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

I already have a fibre network in my building. Why should I install Fibrehood?

The fibre already installed by any other fibre network operator is exclusive (closed) to other service providers. This means that you cannot choose to access services from another ISP unless the install their own infrastructure in your building. The Fibrehood network that we install is open to all service providers which enables you to CHOOSE & SWITCH when you desire. You will never need any other infrastructure installation in future.

Yes, I want it...what now?

Simply express your interest on this website and fill in your details for us to contact you. Alternatively, send an email to [email protected]

What is the cost of the Fibrehood installation?

Our network infrastructure is available on a lease basis to the fibre network operators and ISPs. Generally, to property owners & developers, we only charge the network access build installation cost (i.e. Labour) as the materials & equipment is fully funded by Fibrehood. However, some properties will qualify for zero cost installation – contact us for assessment.

There is NO COST to the subscriber/tenant for the access build (building & premises fibre infrastructure). The fibre passing through every home (unit) door is funded entirely by Fibrehood.

However, subscribing tenants will pay for:

  • In-Home Installation & activation
  • Service subscription
  • CPE Equipment – i.e. Routers
  • Devices (Gadgets i.e. TV, Laptop, Decoder, Cellphone etc.)

Where in my premises will it be installed?

Fibre is brought to your apartment (Unit) through ducts and trunking in the building through access boxes installed on each floor. A fibre cable is then installed along the wall in your house. Fibre is generally terminated behind your TV in the living room.

What equipment will be installed in my home?

We will install equipment generally referred to as Customer Premises equipment (CPE). For your data connection we install a small devise call an Access Termination Box (ATB). For your DStv we install a devise referred to as a Fibre Termination Unit (FTU).

What is the contract term ?

You are not obliged to sign up for use of our infrastructure unless we provide financing for your inhome installation, the CPE equipment or purchase of network.

Does the installed equipment belong to me?

In the infrastructure and equipment remains the property of Fibrehood and should not be removed from the property without the explicit permission of Fibrehood. The benefit of this is that Fibrehood will at its’ own cost replace any faulty equipment. However in the event that you purchase your own
equipment, it will remain your property

What factors enable Fibrehood installation within your building

We take various factors into consideration. The most important include, but are not limited to;
• The number of units in your MDU.
• The demand for high speed broadband required by the community.
• The availability of fibre network operators in the area.
• Building specific features i.e. Existing infrastructure

What is the difference between Fibre, ADSL and LTE?

On a technical level, fibre uses the transmission of light signals through glass fibre cables. Fibre is capable of much higher speeds than DSL (DSL services come in flavours of ADSL and VDSL with the latter being the latest version capable of speeds up to 40Mbps). Fibre can reach up to
1000Mbps, depending on the package you selected from the services available. Because fibre makes use of transmission at the speed of light, the signal between points is much faster than DSL and LTE. Therefore, fibre has a much-reduced latency leading to a better online experience.
Reduced latency generally affects the speed of downloading emails and files, loading websites, streaming videos, etc. DSL sends electrical signals along copper cables. DSL is affected by weather conditions. DSL is particularly affected by lightning strikes (and when copper thieves strike).
LTE sends wireless signals between cell phone towers on specific wireless frequencies. LTE is capable of similar speeds to fibre but at a much higher cost for data.

I now have Fibrehood in my home, how do I activate it?

During the in-home installation, Fibrehood will install a CPE (read about these devices here). Contact an Internet Service Provider (ISP) of your choice and let them know that you already have fibre in your home and place an order for the service or package that you would like activated over the fibre infrastructure. If your selected ISP already has a fibre network in your area they will activate your service over the infrastructure and provide you with a Wi-Fi router. They may also make an appointment with you to help you set up the Wi-Fi router in your home. Once your Wi-Fi router is installed, your
set-up is complete and you should be able to surf the internet. The time taken to complete the set-up depends on a number of variables and also varies from ISP to ISP.
